Moving The Back Court And Mid Court
When going to the back, after the split step go in the rhythm of 1, 2 and 3. There are also 2 types of footwork for the backcourt:
- Offensive - when you are attacking you can either go vie the 1, 2 and 3 method, or you can reach the shuttle early while its still in the air, and take a jump from there
- Defensive - when you are under pressure, you do the same movement to the front, but instead to the back, and at the around the head side, you end up taking a backhand instead
There are 2 types of jump, china jump and scissor jump. The china jump will be most commonly used in a rally and is when you jump not too high but a small jump and land with your right leg behind at the forehand side and left leg behind at the around the head side. Scissor jump is when you have time and jump high, then rotate your body almost 180 degrees so that you can put pressure at the front.
- Know when you can attack
- Use on of the 2 jump at the correct moment
- Landing should not be a squat and maximum a soft bend in the knees
- Foot stance should be wide at all times
- Engage core
One of the most important aspects of the footwork to the mid court is timing the split step properly (just like the other footworks), and staying very low. Normally you have to move towards the mid court section when you are defensive. Things to focus on are:
- Stretching out your racket just like the front court movement
- Staying in balance by engaging your core
- When the shuttle is really far you should take the extra step, otherwise only rotating your upper body should do
- Diving is only essential when you are in a lot of pressure
- Making sure that your foot is pointing to the direction of the corner (not all the times, but mostly)
